My Background:
Graduated University of Miami, Florida BM Degree 1975
Have studied privately with Joe Morello, on and off since 1969
Have studied with Mel Lewis, Gary Chester, Bob Moses, Ed Soph, Jack de Johnette
Specifics of Sources from Which I draw for teaching:
Joe Morello: Joe, himself a student of George Lawrence Stone, (author of "Stick Control"), Billy Gladstone, and Joe Sefcik, has a
specific teaching method that I draw from in my own teaching. The basics of the system will be a available in DVD format in 2004.
He uses Natural Body Movement, and stick heights to control dynmics.
Mel Lewis: Took me on many recording sessions and concerts, played hundreds of recordings form which to learn, and was just an
incredible inspiration. He recorded a series of Interviews with Loren Schoenberg, analyzing the history of Jazz Drums. We hope to
have much of this material available in 2004
Bob Moses: One of the great drummers and teachers of all time. A private drum lesson (of mine) turned into the beginning of his
"Drum Wisdom" book. He has such helpful and motivating ideas, and his playing illustrates what self expression is all about.
Ed Soph: Great teacher, musician, motivator. Ed helped me at a pivital time in my life, when I first moved to New York after college.
Positive reinforcement, great musicianship. I followed him around on tour with Woody Herman and Clark Terry. He stresses getting a
good sound from the drums, and working on specifics for musical development.
Gary Chester; I studied with him before the book was released, and helped in the beginning stages. Tough, loving, supportive. He
treated you like you were at a record date at every lesson, and he wanted you to sound great.
Jack de Johnette; We got together a few times while I was still playing with Metheny. Inspiring, positive, ground breaking
musicianship.
